Maybe I should close my eyes Maybe I should wear my smile Like a loaded gun, like a setting sun, like a hurricane Maybe I could waste your time Maybe you want some of mine But there's a pretty fine line between want and wanted And by now you'd think I'd know how to let things go Maybe I should move upstate Wrap it up, get on my way Like a one-act play, like a holiday, like cellophane Maybe I could leave tonight Maybe you want to hitch a ride But there's a pretty fine line between want and wanted And by now you'd think I'd know how to let things go And by now you'd think I'd know I'm only ever blowing smoke

Lying awake inside of my head And I'm hearing every damn sound The beetles that buzz and the cars always coming Just passing through town While across the way a neon sign's fingers pry through my shade Though I draw the blinds every night I'm starting to think That it won't do a thing And it never will
3.
I know you too well to know how to say "You know me too well to say nothing at all" And there's no right way to know how to say "There is no right way" So say anything Or everything You know I wish you would tell me what it is that I'm missing You know I... I'm not one for getting Anything more than the bare truth Tell me why you don't see what I do This could be the chance we have to get it right I waited so long to tell you why I waited so long to say something at all Yeah there's no right time to know what to say There is no right time To say anything Or everything Like how I wish I could tell you what it is that your missing You know I... I'm not one for giving Anything more than my very all I'll be there you just have to call When you want to take the chance to get it right But you gotta call And we gotta talk Might say nothing at all Or say everything

The War on Comfort The one I need I can't pick a side I will not be aligned I can't find the context Between what I need Between what I want What I can get for free They say go all in or nothing But they don't bet on me They know the house always wins But I know those drinks are free So when I spin that dial And put it all on green If it comes up black Well I'll know what it means I wanna stand for something I'm tired of falling asleep Thought we won in '68 I guess that was all just a dream And you're not Janis Joplin I'm not John Fogerty The bad moon's on the rise Can't stop it hard as we try
5.
Spent most of my life Looking for a sign I know may never come That things may never change But I'm so in love With my own bad luck And all my past mistakes Oh ain't it a shame And I know I've been unkind to you before Please know: my heart and mind are a tug of war And I know I've got no right To come calling for you at your door hoping you'll let me in But it's as good a place as any my friend You're always on my mind And there's been too many times To tell you everything And make you feel the same And if I weren't so young Maybe I'd give it up And set my heart to sea Just wash it away from me And I know I've fed some lines to you before Please know: my heart and mind are a tug of war And I know I've got no right To ask you for one second more to explain who I really am But it's as good a time as any my friend As good a time as any my friend

about

As much of an inside joke as a mantra, The War On Comfort invites one to explore the space between questions and answers: Who are we? Who should we be?

Whose to say which is better?

These 5 songs are my attempt to interrogate the struggle between our desire to change and and our fear of no longer being the same.

I'm not sure there's an answer.
